Major: Psychobiology Favorite UVP Memory: One of my favorite UVP memories was the First Annual Spring Forward where our students were able to visit UCLA and experience the campus for their first time. This event was designed to combine everything they learned over the past year, therefore, they were eager to show us what they remembered and were ready to absorb more information. We included several educational based activities, with an emphasis on healthy eating and exercise. Overall, it was a fun experience that brought the students and volunteers together, which created a more harmonious environment for future site visits. Plus, they all had a great time and continue to ask whether we will have more field trips to UCLA. " |

Major: Global Studies Favorite UVP Memory: My favorite UVP memory has to be the conversations I’ve had with patients and fellow volunteers at our health fairs and clinic site. Not only have these conversations fundamentally changed my understanding of medicine and the systemic issues in our healthcare system, but they have also given me lots of hope for a future where our generation makes health equity a reality. |

Major: Biology Favorite UVP Memory: My favorite UVP memory would have to be the fall health fair in 2019. Since it was in my hometown, Hawthorne, many of my friends and community members attended and I was there first hand to help them. My best friend’s father came in and I took his blood pressure and We were shocked to discover that he had really high blood pressure. Because we head doctors on site, we were able to connect him with a doctor immediately to route his future plan health wise. |

Major: Human Biology and Society Favorite UVP Memory: Overall, my favorite part of 68th Street was creating a strong bond with my students and getting to know them on a personal level over the past two years. I feel so privileged to be able to hear their aspirations, their passions, and be a part of their lives for one day a week. One of my favorite moments was meditating with some students with some peaceful music under a tree since they were too tired to do the physical activity for that day. We ended up laughing too much to actually focus on the meditating and I’m so grateful that they were willing to learn about meditation and take a moment to focus on our mental health.”

Major: Biology Favorite UVP Memory: My favorite UVP memory has to be when I played basketball with all the Islah Kids outside during the 30 minutes of physical activity. It’s my favorite memory for a few reasons. First, their enthusiasm and excitement to play the game and strive to win just filled my heart with joy. Second, seeing the fruits of our labor and making sure the kids are being physically active and taking care of their health shows me that we’re really making a difference in their lives. Lastly, this innocent and beautiful experience reminded me of my childhood and how ecstatic I was to play basketball with my friends. That nostalgia is really cool to me and puts a smile on my face every time. |

Major: Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology Favorite UVP Memory: Going to 68th Street Elementary and spending time with the students is the highlight of my week every week. My favorite moment of visiting the site is whenever all of us volunteers get to the school and the students see us for the first time. They always come running towards us, with arms open wide, ready to learn the week’s lesson. Their eagerness to learn is extremely encouraging to me and makes me want to give them a meaningful experience that they gain something from. My absolute favorite memory from my time as a volunteer happened last year when I would regularly volunteer at 68th street. One week was particularly busy for me, so I decided not to attend site. When I was back the subsequent Tuesday, the students were asking me where I was telling me that they missed me. This struck me. I only saw these kids for one hour one day out of the week. This one hour almost seems insignificant in the one hundred sixty-eight hours that these young people experience every week. To think that I made an impact on them, for them to “miss me” was one of the most tender experiences of my life. |

Major: Biology Favorite UVP Memory: Some of my favorite memories with UVP have been at the Fremont Food Fair. I feel like I’ve made a positive impact on the lives our service recipients by not only informing them about a healthy lifestyle, but also providing them with the means to nourish themselves and their families through healthy produce. Hearing our visitors say, “God bless you” after getting their food is one of the most rewarding aspects of going to site |
