About UVP
Who We Are

UMMA Volunteer Project (UVP) was created in 1996 as a volunteer source for the University Muslim Medical Association (UMMA), a non-profit health clinic established in 1992 by UCLA graduate and undergraduate students. The UMMA Community Clinic serves residents of South Los Angeles who lack proper access to health insurance, suffer from unemployment or are living below the poverty line by providing them with free health care services. UVP provides invaluable service to UMMA Community Clinic by providing a consistent group of UCLA volunteers and also acts a volunteer channel for the surrounding Los Angeles community. In addition to working with the UMMA Clinic, UVP also works with the 68th St. Elementary School and ISLAH LA (Transportation is provided for volunteers to these sites). Besides its weekly sites, UVP also provides service to various other events in the community such as health fairs, annual Tax Day, the Reach Out and Read program, and the Family Hike day.
UVP Sites:
Preventative Health Initiative at the UMMA Clinic
Each week, volunteers spread awareness of healthy lifestyle practices, discuss disease prevention, and provide invaluable healthcare services to the underserved communities of South Los Angeles. Alongside providing healthcare assistance, volunteers also perform clerical duties and general services for the patients of UMMA.
68th Street Elementary
At this site, volunteers work with kids in an after-school “Step Up!” program. Student volunteers conduct projects and activities both inside and outside the classroom to teach K-6th graders about the importance of healthy diet and exercise. Volunteers visit this site once a week.
ISLAH Academy
Volunteers work with kids after school at this South LA elementary school. Student volunteers conduct projects and activities both inside and outside the classroom to teach K-8th graders about the importance of health and exercise. Volunteers visit this site once a week.
Health Fairs
UVP works with UMMA Clinic to hold health fairs about 1-3 times a quarter where volunteers can help provide healthcare assistance and perform general services for patients of underserved communities throughout Los Angeles.
Health Justice Scholars Program (HJSP)
Volunteers teach high schoolers from South LA about medicine and public health and integrate contemporary case studies from those fields into weekly curriculum. Students receive guidance on a self-directed capstone project they present at our annual symposium, and also receive college and career advice from our volunteers.
